WHAT??

You mean to tell me this is the last day of 2010??

I feel kind of how Lia looks in this photo.  Shocked that this year is over.  There have been days when I've felt as out of control of my life/feelings as her hair.  I've had a cut that has left a scab on my heart, just as there is a small scab on her forehead.  I've had sleepless nights that have left bags under my eyes.  But...look at the overall picture - what I see is a beautiful little girl beneath the minor temporary imperfections.  She's happy and she brings so much joy to so many people.  She's quick with a smile and loves to laugh. I'm getting closer and closer to being that girl too.  Back to the "old" Kristen.  2011is going to be a great year!!

Dancing Partner

Grief has been my dancing partner these last few days and I'd really like for him to go away.  I'm ready for a new partner and a new song.

Life's A Dance

...and when you're dancing with Daddy, you know it's all going to be OK

There is deeper meaning to this post than just what you see in the pictures.  I am thankful for what this represents to me.

"Chocca-Chocca" Choo Choo

With all the cute holiday decorating ideas floating around I decided it would be great fun for the kids and I to build a gingerbread train.  Off I went to the store to get the goodies to put one together.  I had such visions in my head of exactly how this was going to go. Weeeeeeell...it didn't exactly work out how I'd planned, but we did have fun.  The project did take about 3 days to complete.  But this is me we're talking about.  I do not have a "crafty" bone in my body.  I want to, I try to, but it just doesn't work for me.  I have my Mom to thank for that.  She doesn't either.  You're born with it or not...and we were not.

I present to you our "Candy Chocca-Chocca" that took us 3 days to put together.   This should have been a quick, few minute project.  Oh well...it was cute and we had a great time.  (*the kids had a great time...I just about went nuts trying to keep the crazy thing "glued" together  *I MAY have a few more gray hairs)

sweet little boy fingers...he tried so hard to put all the little candies on there just perfect
he's a perfectionist by nature, a place for everything and everything in it's place
he is NOT like his mother in that respect

sweet chubby baby girl fingers...she was just happy to be playing in candy
she is NOT a perfectionist, there is usually a trail left in her wake
she IS like her mother in that respect

finished "chocca-chocca"
kind of Dr. Seuss'ish

This just made me smile every time I looked at it.
That crooked smoke stack - it's kind of like our lives.  It may not be perfect, but it does serve a purpose and hopefully it's pleasant to look at.

Thanksgiving

This year David's parents and grandparents visited us from Florida for Thanksgiving.  We had a great time with them.  Of course there was the standard over abundance of scrumptious food...but that was only a small part of what we enjoyed.  What we really loved:

plenty of kisses to go around...can't get too many of those

lots of time playing...nothing like Grandpa to make a girl feel like she's the only one in his world

quiet time reading books...sweet time spent with Mimi

I'm Gonna Miss This...

I haven't posted as much over the last few weeks as I've been just enjoying these moments that are fleeting before my eyes.  Time waits for no man, my children included, and I have been in awe of them more than ever lately.  There isn't a day that goes by that I don't just gaze in wonder at these two little children I get to call mine.  Sure, sometimes I get weary, sometimes I want to pull my hair out, sometimes I want to scream at the top of my lungs because I feel overwhelmed by the commotion caused by these two; but one day I'll want to do these things because of the lack of commotion.  So...I busted out the camera this past week (surprise, surprise) and just took a few shots of the everyday happenings that make my world go round.  A few things I'm going to miss:

A shared "Super Hero" cape
Because they're each each other's super hero.  He can't live without her and she worships the ground he walks on.  (Which pretty much sums up my feelings for both of them.)  And they're both my Super Hero's!

Personal Concerts
I'm privileged to have impromptu concerts put on for me.  It's almost always a duet.  It's beautiful music if I do say so!

Couch Time
These two love to play on the couch.  They hide under their blanket "tent", make each other laugh, tell stories, and show off new tricks to Mom.

Play puzzle/ magnet books
They can sit for a long time working together with these books.  He tells her where to put the magnets and she does.  Those chubby fingers - oh my!  And the Towmater band aid, necessary due to a fall.  And really, there's something magic about band aids that can heal just about anything.

Sweet Dreams
I feel so privileged to get to call these two little angels mine.  I am one lucky Mom.

Halloween 2010

We had two little monkeys running around this year (which is pretty much business as usual) at Halloween.  I enjoyed watching the kids dressed alike as I know my time for being able to do this is limited - soon enough they will have stronger opinions as to what they would like to dress up like.  For now they're just happy with whatever Mom picks out (for the most part) so I'm taking full advantage of that!  I love my two adorable little chocolate eyed monkeys!

We headed out to a local fall festival.  A couple of Jacobs soccer buddies were there also so we got to hang out with them for a bit.  All the kids had a great time.

Lia gets to play a ball toss game to win some candy - SCORE!

checking out her loot

The city had one of their fire trucks there for the kids (and Dads) ;) to explore.
Mr. Jacob thought he was some kind of cool getting to get inside it.

OK kids - time to head home
Jacob adjusts his "belt and sword" from Deek the Clown

Lia gets a ride on Daddy's shoulders.
(His usual position is wrapped around her little finger!)

All in all we had a great time!

Shoot Me!: 27

Another great meme brought to us by Carin at Forever In Blue Jeans. Every Thursday post a picture of you with a child, spouse, friend or even by yourself. If you are thinking this challenge is too hard, then this is exactly the challenge you need. Do you have thousands of pictures and you are in none of them? How is that good to your children or loved ones? It’s time you got in the picture, you’ll be glad you did!

I think this photo is a bit self-explanatory! ;)  More from our Trick or Treating adventures...sometime.

The Three Year Old

UPDATE - somehow I missed a bit of the introduction - and was horrified when I saw it up on here...I do apoligize!  I've removed it now and this should be "safe" for anyone.  I was so busy laughing at the real content, I didn't even pick up on the introduction.  Guess I'll be a little more careful next time I post something from someone else!

I found this post on Motherhood Uncensored's blog.  I find it absolutely hilarious!  I've lived through just about every one of these situations so I can totally relate - and I figure some of you can too!  Yes, yes, I love my kids as much as the next person, wouldn't want to live withouth them, yada, yada, yada...but sometimes, you just have these days!

Congrats on Your 3-Year-Old!

Included:
3-year-old child

Not included but strongly recommended:
Tequila IV
Ear plugs
Punching bag

Here are some things moms have said after receiving this product:
I'd rather have electro-shock therapy!
Since receiving my 3-year-old, I chose to run with the bulls just to get a little rest and relaxation!
Having a 3-year-old is less fulfilling than cleaning out a day's worth of runny poo diapers!
It gave me PTSD!
I've never felt so stupid in my life!

Here are 10 handy tips to get you started on parenting your 3-year-old:
1. They like nothing.
1a. Well, sometimes they like stuff, but it's only on every 4th Thursday that falls in an odd summer month when the weather is partly cloudly.
1b. Or if it's covered in chocolate.
1c. Maybe.
1d. Depends.

2. If they do happen to like something, they will never like it again.
2a. Maybe.
2b. Depends.

3. Everything can be argued.
3a. Especially when you're in public, with your hands full of groceries and other children, and tons of other people around. (Reference #4)
3b. Or when you've just gotten all the other children to sleep.
3c. But never with your spouse or babysitter.

4. They have impeccable timing. 4a. Like when you're a good 10 minutes away from a potty and they decide that they must poop.
4b. NOW.

5. They have no filter
5a. Like when you're in a dressing room trying on bras.
5b. Or when you're in a public restroom with your pants around your ankles.

6. Everything is negotiable.
6a. On their terms.
6b. Even bodily functions.

7. Hearing may be selective.
7a. Repeating yourself will only cause them to hear less.
7b. Speaking loudly at them will only make you look more crazy.
7c. Yelling at them will make them cower like a wounded animal thus sending you into a guilt-stricken state in which you will give them exactly what they wanted in the first place and then some how apologize.
7d. See #8.

8. They always win.

9. If someone else has it, they will want it.
9a. But only at their house, not at your own.
9b. But only at the store, not when you buy it.
9c. But if you don't get it, then they will throw a tantrum the size of Mount Vesuvius. (See #4)

10. They will respond to everything with "No!"
10a. Even if it's not a question.
10b. Even if they actually do want it.
10c. You're supposed to know the difference.
10d. Idiot.

Again - these are NOT my words - I got this from Motherhood Uncensored.  She *may have raised a three year old or two!!

My Girl

Lia's "official" 2 year photo.  She doesn't cooperate with me as much as she used to when it comes time to do a photo shoot.  I am "just" Mom.  She absolutely REFUSES to look at the camera now.  Not that I want "cheesy" photos or even posed ones.  Actually, I would prefer NOT to have those, BUT, you'd think I could get a little cooperation!!  Nope, not gonna happen.  I did manage to get this one where she was actually looking at me.  The little stinker knows what she's doing!  Oh well, I'll take what I can get.  And I think this is pretty cute.  She's still my "Sweet & Spicy".  I can't imagine life without her.

Lights

This is the second little conversation I've had with Jacob lately that I'm posting here.  I don't want to forget these sweet little insights as to what thoughts are going through my baby boy's head.  These days of innocence are going by far to fast.

A conversation from out of the blue yesterday as we were driving.
Jacob: "Mom, do we have lights inside our bodies?"
Me:  "no"
Jacob:  "Well, how does God see inside us when he lives in our hearts?"
Me:  "ummmm"
Jacob:  "I love you Mom"
Me:  *swoon

Later Jacob informed me "Mom, sometimes I can feel God in me".   I know his 4 year old self doesn't really understand the workings of God (neither does my 34 year old self sometimes!) but I'm glad he's starting to think about God.

Shoot Me!: 26 First Soccer Game

Another great meme brought to us by Carin at Forever In Blue Jeans. Every Thursday post a picture of you with a child, spouse, friend or even by yourself. If you are thinking this challenge is too hard, then this is exactly the challenge you need. Do you have thousands of pictures and you are in none of them? How is that good to your children or loved ones? It’s time you got in the picture, you’ll be glad you did!

A few Saturdays ago Jacob had his first 2 soccer games.  He got put on a team that is all 3 year olds (some of them just barely) and he's 4 1/2.  That's quite an age difference and I can definitely tell in the way they play.  Not that Jacob is some kind of superstar, but he IS the only one that actually stays on the field and plays the game.  Seriously, the ONLY one on his team that actually plays.  Our team is lucky if they have 3 of the 6 kids to walk onto the field at the beginning of the games just to watch the coin toss.  By 15 seconds into the game a couple of kids have walked off and Jacob is the only one left to "play" against the other teams.  I think instead of being the Tadpoles, the team should change their name to "Team Jacob".  He h as handled it quite well.  I am very proud of him.  By the time this past Saturday came, and it was his third game to play pretty much on his own, though, he was getting a bit frustrated.  Two other kids play intermittently if their parents are standing on the sidelines making them go back onto the field.  But you can imagine what kind of playing they do...none.  The other parents do try to get their kids out there, the coach does try to get everyone out there, but it's just not working.  Next year Jacob will be able to move up to the 5 and 6 year old team and hopefully he'll get put on a team where the kids will at least stay on the field!   We do like our coach and what he's trying to do, it's just a young group of boys Jacob happen to have gotten put with this time.  Needless to say he's learning some life lessons!  Tears of frustration were flowing by the time his last game was over and this Mommas heart was hurting, but it wasn't anything Chick-fil-a couldn't help!  We are so proud of our little man for going out there and trying anyway - he may not be big, but he sure is playing big!

Guess What!

My soul sings today!!  There is something back in stores that makes me one VERY happy girl.  First one to tell me exactly what it is gets a gift certificate to the store where I buy it.  (Yes, I have blogged about it before.)  We're talking a $5 certificate, nothing fancy.  Just enough for you to go out and purchase this item plus have a little change. I'll send something else too, but I'm not divulging what just yet as that would be a huge clue.  Happy figuring!

Another thing that makes my soul sing....I'm going to have a NIECE!!  I'm so thrilled I can hardly stand myself!  Lia is going to have a girl cousin to grow up with!!  I'll have a niece (that lives close vs clear across the country) to spoil.  My parents get to have TWO grand-daughters, and my brother gets to have a daughter.  Life feels really good right now. ;)

Prairie Hen Giveaway!

So...I don't do many "head to so & so's" to get something free posts but...I'll make an exception for The Prairie Hen.  She's super cool, lovely, makes me laugh milk out of my nose, real, and has an incredibly crazy mind!  I love her zany sence of humor.  She's hosting an awesome give-away - head on over there and check her out - you'll be glad you did.  Yep, it would be cool if you won the prize, (even more cool if I won it!) ;)....but the REAL prize is getting a peak inside that brain of hers!

She's just as cool in real life too...you can read about our time together here.  It makes my heart hurt to see how much our kids have grown since then...Lia was just a baby...didn't even have all those crazy curls yet!

Hold Me

Conversation yesterday afternoon as I layed down beside Jacob and held him for a few minutes.

Jacob:  "Momma, will you hold me forever?"
Me: (thinking) yes, son, I will...in my heart

Shoot Me!: 25 Double Date

Another great meme brought to us by Carin at Forever In Blue Jeans. Every Thursday post a picture of you with a child, spouse, friend or even by yourself. If you are thinking this challenge is too hard, then this is exactly the challenge you need. Do you have thousands of pictures and you are in none of them? How is that good to your children or loved ones? It’s time you got in the picture, you’ll be glad you did!

So, a few days ago, David and I went out on a double date.  "Mr. Short, Dark, and Handsome" took me out, and David took out "Mizz Personality".  We went to a fun little place, Salsarita's.  It's nothing fancy, but with our dates, fancy is NOT a requirement.  We decided we had such a great time with them, we might want to go try it again.  A few kisses *may have been stolen during the evening.

Mr. Short, Dark, & Handsome and I...I think we look pretty good together!

Mizz Personality and David...there were definitely sparks!

Sad

I’ve debated whether to share such personal feelings here as this is such a public forum.  It’s easy to put only the “look at us, we’re such a happy family, life is perfect” posts up, but the reality is, sometimes life isn’t so perfect.

Last night was very long and hard for me, so many emotions rushing through me.  Remembering and re-living experiences from the last few months.  The happiest times and the most heart wrenching ones.  The eerie stillness and silence that filled the exam room as the doctor was trying to find a little life.  Feeling like my world came crashing down as the words “I’m sorry, but your baby did not make it” were spoken, the sound of my sobbing, the sight of David’s tears flowing, having to actually make eye contact with someone (anyone) after that.  Having to will the strength into my legs just to be able to stand up.  Fighting for every breath.  It was not pretty.  Our world altered.  It was hard to adjust to being not pregnant after I’d recently adjusted to being pregnant again.  The not looking at the book each week to see how big baby is and what is developing that week, the non discussion of baby names.  Funny the difference between the car ride to that appointment vs the car ride back home.  On the way up we were discussing how I was 11 weeks and we found out Jacob was a boy at 12 weeks.  We discussed names, and wondered what kind of acrobatic moves we would be seeing in a few minutes.  On the way back we were calling my parents asking them if they could come take care of our kids the next Monday while I had a procedure done.  “They” say miscarriage is a “normal event”, however, it feels anything but normal to the parents who are dreaming about the life of their new baby.  I used to think miscarriage early in a pregnancy was really no big deal.  So that pregnancy is over, but it’s not a baby you’ve held in your arms yet, you can get pregnant again, and life is back to being just as lovely as before.  WRONG!  To the Mom & Dad that is one of your children you’ll never get to see, you’ll never get to hold, you’ll never get to know their personality.  And though you’ve never held them in your arms, you’ve most certainly held them in your hearts.  Whether you have other children after that or not, the next child will never replace the one you lost.

I would be 20 weeks this week if that pregnancy wouldn’t have ended.  We would be finding out this week if it was a boy or a girl.  As it is, however, we will never know if Jacob and Lia lost their brother or their sister.  We will never know if we lost a son or a daughter.  That is the reason my heart is feeling extra tender this week..  The “what might have beens”.  I know I can’t live in the past, I can’t live with ghosts of what never will be, but for right now I’m having a hard time getting these out of my head.

Also – this is specific to early pregnancy loss – a D&C IS a big deal.  So often it’s described as a “minor procedure blah blah blah”…but to the parents (especially Mom), it is so much more.  That day for me was as hard as the day I found out baby had died.  You go into the hospital knowing when you leave you will no longer be carrying your baby.  That was enough to *almost make me not go.  But there would have been other (worse) complications if I would have given in to my heart instead of my head.  It is so much more than just another medical procedure.  To the Mom it is like going in to have your baby, knowing you will come out with empty arms.  There are so many emotions involved you cannot understand unless you’ve been there.

Everyone’s experience with grief is different.  I realize that.  There are a few things I think might be universal though.  1.)If you ask someone how they’re doing after a loss and they tell you “fine”, they are not really fine.  Don’t let that fake smile fool you.  2.)Nothing beats sending a real note the “old fashioned way” through snail mail.  I only received one of these.  That note is the only tangible thing I have from the pregnancy.  No ultrasound photo (Dr. didn’t print any), no ribbon off flowers (didn’t receive any of those), no nothing…except the one note.  A HUGE thank-you to the person who sent it!  I don’t mean this in a “poor pitiful me” way, just something to think about when you hear about someone else who experiences a miscarriage.  I did receive many, many “thinking about you” and personal letters through e-mail.  Those were great and touched my heart.  I valued every one of them and they were all special to me.  But still…nothing beats a hand written letter in the mail if you have an address.  And you never know if your letter might be the only tangible thing the Mom has from her pregnancy.

Now, I know there are many parents who have been through much, much harder experiences than we have.  I can’t begin to imagine what it would be like to experience multiple miscarriages, the loss of a full term baby, or a child at any point after you’ve brought them home.  Be it 2 months, 2 years, or 20 years.  That being said, the grief after miscarriage is very real and very deep.

I hope I haven’t sounded whiney but these are a few things that have been on my mind and I felt like I wanted to get off my chest.  I am thankful for my family and friends who did send notes and called.  One friend called multiple times and I appreciated it so much.  She didn’t expect me to be “over it” the next week.  I am thankful for the two awesome children I already have.  Without them this would have been a much harder experience.  I do realize that and I now know with an even greater clarity what a miracle they truly are.  Most of all, I am thankful for my Father in Heaven who has helped me through the hardest (so far) time in my life.  I know He will help me more in the days to come.  Around February 16th will be another hard time for me.  That’s when Baby S. was due.

Soccer Time!

I am officially a "Soccer Mom" now!!  I'm not sure who is more excited about it, me or Jacob.  He had his first practice yesterday evening.  I must admit I was a bit nervous, not knowing how he would do in a sports related group setting.  I shouldn't have been!  He's never been a "ball boy".  He has always been all about planes, trains and automobiles but we wanted to expose him to something else also.  I was so proud of how he handled himself in a new situation.  He was proud of himself too. ;)  "Mom, I listened to my coach."  "Mom, I did what the coach said."  "Mom, I did such a good job!"  "Mom, did you see me kick the ball?"  "Mom, I ran fast."  Mom, I like my new friends."  The coach was super nice too.  An "older dad" ;), and just the kind of man I was hoping Jacob would get as his first coach.  Now, I know, we haven't had our first game yet, and a few things may come up before this is all over with, but overall, for our first time at all this sports stuff, I'm as pleased as can be.  It was wonderful for Jacob and I both to feel really good about this the first day.

Our team name...The Tadpoles!!  The parents got to choose whatever name they wanted...someone (a Dad) came up with the Bullfrogs as our colors are green and black.  One Mom piped up and suggested the Tadpoles (because this is the 3 & 4 year old group) instead.  It stuck.  The Dad weren't any to impressed, but us Moms thought it was cute.  And you know..."If Momma ain't happy, ain't nobody happy.  If Daddy ain't happy, who cares!"

Now enjoy a few photos of my little Tadpole in action!
*Brag alert - Mr. Jacob was the fastest one out on the field!  He stayed ahead of the kids most of the time.  I wasn't proud or anything.  When it came to actually kicking the ball, however, he was NOT the strongest! ;)  It was the shortest (and probably youngest) kid who was the strongest!

Party Time!: Cake Time

uuummmmm...now for the sweet part!

The obligatory cousin photo...where it is absolutely impossible to get all 4 kids to look half-way normal all at the same time...not gonna happen.  I'd like to send a big thank-you to Crystal for teaching Jacob the "thumbs in your ears" trick.  That's Klass with a capital K! ;)

OK...so we'll try this again behind Lia's cake.  Yeah, had pretty much the same luck.  But, really, we hadn't gotten our hopes up to high that everyone would cooperate at the same time.  Oh well...they're still such cuties!  Crazy faces and all.

So, we'll move on to the family shots.  Ohh...look...Brad's family looking good!

My family...not so much.  Do you think we could get ONE picture with every one looking normal??  So, you get to laugh at all of these.  That bottom one cracks me up every time I see it.  I think I'm going to print it and have it handy for days I need a "pick-me-up".  My girl does look pretty sweet though.

and finally...time to dig in!
uuummm...sweetness

Party Time! The Guests...

Our party was actually quite small...but that's OK...we had a great time anyway!  It's not about quantity, it's about quality - right?  The weather was absolutely perfect that evening.  It wasn't near as humid as usual so we were able to actually enjoy being outside without sweat pouring down us the moment we walked out the door.  A gentle cool breeze, the sounds of good conversation and kids laughing, and the smell of great food made the evening perfect.  Other than our families, only two other couples were able to attend.  They're great friends of ours and we felt pretty lucky to have them.

Meet Crystal & Warner.
Awesome people.  Because of some experiences in our lives, I feel as close to them as if I we've all been great friends forever.  We're really glad they live close to us now and have enjoyed spending time with them.

Meet Shelly & Nathan
They're really super-cool too!  Nathan is my "help, I locked myself out of the house" guy.  He's my "help, I can't start my car" guy.  And my "HELP!!  MY COMPUTER IS CRASHING I'M LOSING ALL MY PICTURES" guy.  He's a pretty handy dude to know.  (I should mention these are times when David is at work and can't help out his Damsel-In-Distress...he's not being a slacker husband!)  Shelly is was my Zumba friend, my "let's go to lunch" friend, my "we have no electricity at our house and it's only 115* or -15* can we come over" friend, my friend that I like just because I enjoy being with her.

Now...for the faces you really want to see...

Trace...aka T-Bird

Trevin...aka Tracks

Jacob - aka juuuune-year

Lia - aka Lilly-yon

(all nick names are compliments of my brother...and he's pretty much the only one that uses them)
He's not normal - Mom dropped him on his head when he was a baby - that's my theory.

Kid sitting - "Scooter" style!

Last Friday night, as Lesha and I were doing last minute prep work for the birthday party on Saturday, my brother Brad (AKA "Scooter" to his nephews/niece) volunteered to keep the kids entertained.  I guess, if I was being totally honest, I would say he got volunteered to keep the kids!  In all of his infinite wisdom, he decided puzzles would be THE thing to keep their little minds and hands occupied.  Well, it kept them occupied all right, but I don't think it was exactly how he had it planned.  With a 2 year old, 2 3 year olds, and a 4 year old (who is extremely OCD when it comes to puzzles) little hands were kept occupied all right - with everyone else's puzzle except their own!  Minds and mouths were also occupied with much squealing and fussing about so-and-so stealing their puzzle pieces!  Relaxing, it was not.  But in the end all the puzzles were successfully put together.  We took a few photos to celebrate the occasion...enjoy!  This is REAL life at our house. ;)

"OK - all of you look right here"
umm...Jacob, could you quit pushing air bubbles out of your mouth for a few seconds?
aww...look at my girl.  So sweet.

"Scooter??  Boys??"
could you look this way for 2 seconds please?
see Lia, she's doing what she's supposed to

ahhh...there's Trace and Trevin with their million dollar smiles
Scooter??  Jacob??
Lia - this isn't looking so good...could be mischief coming

ok, ok, so now we've got Scoot and Jacob looking toward the camera!
Trace? Trevin?
Lia???  I'm afraid to ask

oh my...

there are no words!
