Ok, here's the situation...my parents went off on a weeks’ vacation...(all of us who were kids of the 80's have that tune in our heads now don't we)! ;)
The real situation...we can't come up with a name for Gertrude that we both like that fits our criteria. (I know, you all thought I was being serious when I said her name would be Gertrude Agnes and I hate to break the news, but we're not REALLY going to use that name.) ;) We had a name all picked out long before she was ever thought of that our hearts (ok, ok, ok, MY heart) was set on but now I'm not feeling real good about it. It's a beautiful sounding name, but I just don't like the spelling. I've thought about different ways to spell it but can't come up with a solution that way either. Maybe I need to move on to a different name. This is where we need your help. Think about our last name: it's long, strong, and no one can spell it or say it correctly the first time. *Note to the rest of our family with the same name, I do NOT mean that in any negative way, it's just the facts. ;) These are the criteria the name must meet:
1. short'ish
2. easy to spell
3. if it's on the "Top 10" list we are NOT interested
(I'm still not liking the fact that Jacob is the #1 name for a boy for the 9th year in a row...I mean, didn't everyone else in the world get the message that that name should have been reserved for us!) ;)
4. if it's to "far out" we're not interested
5. cannot start with a "S"
6. must be a feminine name, not one that could go for either gender
7. she will get called by whatever her name is, no nick-names
Surely SOMEONE out there can give some suggestions! Feel free to leave as many suggestions as you’d like. If you don't know us from the man in the moon feel free to leave a suggestion, if you're some of our best friends leave a suggestion. If you're family...I guess you can suggest something. ;) That was just a JOKE!! We're wide open at the moment. We want to live with her name for a while before she's born to make sure we really like it.
Grand prize if we pick your suggestion: the satisfaction of knowing you helped out your fellow mankind when they were in dire straits.

Hi. Don't think I've ever met you, I'm just a blog hopper that happened across your blog. The name game is so hard! We just had a little girl 6 months ago, so I can share some of the names on our list with you. I like Mariah, Brooklyn and Aubrey. We ended up naming our little girl Brooke. You can use that too, I don't care. :)
Good luck with finding a name!
OH! I don't know....i have started to run out of girl names. I seem to like older names and I don't know if they are in the top 10 or not. But a few...Mia, Ella, Audrey, Molly....Have FUN!:)
That's a tough one! If you stick with the "J's", I think Jenna is cute (think cute Bush daughter). The other J's (Maxine's family) could help you out here as her girls all have cute original names.:) Oh, and one of our girls names we had picked out was "Heather". Kind of feminine and may be too long. Good luck!
I like shelley's suggestion of Mia, I also like Anna, Libby, Eve,Ella, and Janey(a lot). good luck .
I was here last night and had a long comment typed up and then pushed the wrong button. grrrr... :)
The short of it was, while reading your criteria, Brooke was the name that popped into my head, and then I saw that Janelle had mentioned that name. And Katie is probably on the list but always a favorite of mine (and goes well with Jacob.)
We have some unique names in our area. Thea, Brya, Kiera. And Amy is a nice short name...:)
Okay... this comment is still long! Happy choosing. It's a fun thing to occupy your mind with while you wait and it doesn't matter what you choose, she'll wish you had called her something different at least once or twice in her life.
HHHHMMMM....The name game...always fun. :) I always liked Courtney but Scott didn't (probably too long for you). Our other girl name that we never used was Brynn - went along with our other B's. Of course I LOVE the 2 other suggestions of Brooke. ha Jenny would be cute...Jacob and Jenny...but maybe you're not into doing all the J's........GOOD LUCK!!
Well...well...well sounds like someone else is having the same problem we are having!?! I will suggest "Rayna Michelle" it is the name that I had picked out before I was married but the hubby says No. Maybe you can let me know what the name is that you aren't liking any more and we could just swap names! ;)
I also don't want an name in the top 100 (or a name that someone we know has). I think that I have been to every name sight on the web and even have help coming from friends; but to no avail... yet!!!
So I feel your "pain"!! I also would like to figure out something soon so we can 'sleep on it' to make sure it's the perfect name.
Good Luck!
Oh... you are brave to be asking for input. ;) Girl names I like that I think meet your criteria:
* Kieva Rael (I wanted to name our baby girl this so bad, but Craig's not on board with me on this one... plus, we haven't had a baby girl. Ha.) - pronounced "kee-vah" "ray-el"
* Tia, Tiana
* Hailey Michele
* Nora
* Emily
I have a whole list somewhere, but I'm too lazy to go look for it. If I find it, I might add some more later. Good luck with this one. ;)
Hello, we don't know each other but you are on my nephew's blog list. I also vote for Brooke .. that's one of our girls' names. Brooke Daria (Dar-e-ah).
Good luck and congrats.
Joy
We just found out that you were going to have another little nephew, so we'll share the "possible" names we were thinking about using for a little girl... Lilly (or Lillian) and Chloe. It's just so hard to decide!! Good luck!
Love,
Some of the people who share your same last name
I really did not mean to be "anonymous" when I made that last comment. It was from us! :)
I like Libby too. Couldn't believe I read it in Teresa's comment. Yay! It's not just me!
I think you're looking for a name that doesn't state "I was born in 1920, 1960, 2006" etc. I think some of the names mentioned above will do that. I prefer the name that you like. I also like Amy-very feminine, short, ageless, & can't be shortened to a nickname. Of course you wouldn't want a middle name starting with S as that would eliminate monograms! Anne is also very timeless and classic, and I know someone kin to you that has a middle name like that, with a slight spelling difference. On another note, where are your guesses to the charade characters?
Thanks to all of you who have left suggestions. It just so happens that my top 3 "alternate names" have been listed. But David has vetod them all. :( He keeps going back to the origional name...guess his heart was set on it a little more than I realized. We're still open to more suggestions...just wanted to say thanks to those of you who have taken the time to actually responded to this post.
I know just what you mean when you want a name NOT in the top 10, NOT for either gender and NOT far out! Well, I'm sure some people think some of my names are a little "far out"...but not really considering!
I don't like it when they use "boys" names for girls! (I know a girl named Ryan--) and I did finally use Morgen for a boy even tho it's used more for girls now. It didn't use to be at all, & it was a favorite of mine.
I love my kid's names...loved talking names & deciding. I usually went with our two top favories of each gender (never knew ahead of time) and then decided for sure after they were born depending on what seemed to "fit" the baby best after we saw him/her!
You'd think after I got to choose names for 9 girls, that I wouldn't have any others, but here's my other favorites.
*Alaina*Brenna*Carrie*Glena*Heather*Jaela
*Jennifer*Joni*Lanae*Larisa*Laina
*Rhianna*Tara*Wrena.
(My girls are: Jeanne, Jana, Laura, Lynisha, Dalayna, Relyssa, Meshayla, Kara & Kaela)
I like Molly and Lora. These are older simple names that haven't made splashy comebacks like Hannah, Emily, Emma, etc have. Call me crazy, but I also like Fiona, maybe not with your last name though? One more old simple name, Willa.
I am one of those lurkers who enjoy your blog from time to time. I think you have some darling suggestions to think about too. One that I really like is from the Bible, but the pronunciation that I have always heard isn't the sound that I like. Then someone named their little girl this name but pronounced differently. The spelling in the Bible is Junia. The way I have heard it is Joonia. But the way I like it is when it rhymes with Maria. It also can be spelled differently - Janea or J'Nea. I like it with a middle name. Janea Rose. Good Luck!
Looks like your list is growing so I will just add my favorite name as of today!
*Aubrey*
Good luck - can hardly wait for that special little someones birthday!
@ Janelle & Wrena - Aubrey was my #1 alternate name so I had quite a grin when it was listed in the first comment
@ Traci - Jenna was my #2 alternate name
@ Teresa & Susan - Anna was on my list
@ Maxine - Joni was on my list
Y'all are on the same wave length as me it seems...but now after all this, we're probably going to go with the name we originally picked out (which has not been listed). A few names close to it have so that's convinced me that our first name is fine. So see, something helpful did come out of this. ;)
I also have never met you - just happened upon your blog when blog hopping one day - now I have it bookmarked as your blog is among my favorites! What a fun post this name game is! Recently one of our friends named their little girl Nora - I love that. Among the great names suggested already -I also like Greta. It will be fun to hear what you decide. Best wishes from Wyoming - monique
I think you ought to use the variation of Anne:)
Enjoyed reading your post (laughs) and the comments! Looks like no further suggestions are needed but wanted to say GOOD LUCK on your name picking. My sister is due Sunday so we are anxiously awaiting the gender and the name!
Alison
I like Olivia, Rowan, Jera, and Nina.
Good luck with your quest!
April
hi, since i've read all the comments i may as well leave one myself although you may not need any more suggestions! when we were having our 4th we needed a "t" name we thought since our first guy's name starts with a t and then we have two g's...so to bookend it we wanted another t. thank goodness we didn't have a boy because i still don't like the name we were going to use for that. but for the girl i was thinking Tess. I still like it. But then we both agreed on the name Teagan. We love it and most everyone else seems to like it too. It's a welsh name...but we're not Welsh! Oh well! Happy name finding!
